En tant que femme francophone, cis et h\u00e9t\u00e9rosexuelle, j&#8217;\u00e9tais consciente de certains de mes privil\u00e8ges, mais j&#8217;ignorais encore de nombreuses fa\u00e7ons dont la langue fran\u00e7aise, jouait un r\u00f4le dans la formation et la description des visions du monde, d\u2019une fa\u00e7on qui \u00e0 mon avis d\u00e9savantage plusieurs personnes faisant partie de la communaut\u00e9 LGBTQIA2S+. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ce challenge, j&#8217;ai eu l&#8217;opportunit\u00e9 de vraiment me concentrer sur l&#8217;analyse des mots, leur genre et ce qu&#8217;ils peuvent signifier.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>J&#8217;ai commenc\u00e9 par m&#8217;instruire et par prendre quelques cours rapides sur l&#8217;\u00e9criture inclusive. Cependant, j&#8217;ai trouv\u00e9 que les ateliers sur le sujet \u00e9taient peu nombreux et <strong>la plupart des informations semblaient d\u00e9pass\u00e9es,<\/strong> m\u00eame \u00e0 moi qui ne suis en aucun cas un expert en la mati\u00e8re. As a native French speaker and cis, heterosexual woman, I was aware of many of my privileges, but I was still ignorant on many of the ways in which language, especially French, played in a role in shaping and describing world-views. Thanks to this challenge, I was given the opportunity to really focus on analyzing words, their gender, and what they can mean.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wanted to start with educating myself and decided to take a few quick classes on inclusive writing. However, I found that workshops on the subject were few and far between, and <strong>most of the information seemed outdated<\/strong>, even to me, who is in no way an expert on the matter. My process ended up being as follows:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I chose to use as few gendered words as possible, by allowing myself creative space to swap more commonly used gendered words for different non-gendered ones (for example, personnel de la sant\u00e9 vs professionnel de la sant\u00e9).\u00a0<\/li><li>I chose to use iel. For those who do not know, iel is the Frech equivalent of using a third person \u201cthey\u201d in English. And I want to point out I had not realized ielle was the more \u201cfeminine\u201d version of the word, which I find both good in terms of allowing people to choose precisely their pronouns, but also somehow restrictive, as there is no purely non-gendered pronoun. I also want to point out the need for these pronouns to become more mainstream, and for important French organisation (and dictionaries) to recognize their existence.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li>I also wanted to confirm with every member of our Team how they felt with the translation of their bios. Through my process of translation, I realized how very personal the words in one\u2019s bio can be, and wanted to make sure to respect and honour everyone\u2019s.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I quickly realized <strong>how much of the commonly-used French word are gendered<\/strong>, especially in the clinical setting. I had never really understood how much of an impact this can have, as each words seems to be only in feminine or masculine forms. \u201cA big gap in inclusivity\u201d, I thought. I wish this could be addressed, but I also see how they are deeply engrained in a system of language based on gender, which may render this task difficult. It is also very important to consider the impact that the choice of words has on a patient, especially for building a therapeutic relationship based on trust. This is not about grasping at straws or being picky, but really about respect.
